Invest in a decent waterproof/windproof jacket!
Before traveling anywhere in the cold months, you're going to need a jacket to keep you warm in any conditions. We did a lot of research before we bought our jackets, and we're glad we did! We didn't want to buy jackets with down in them, which made things a little more difficult, but now we have jackets that are waterproof, windproof, warm, comfortable, practical and vegan. We were our jackets almost everyday while we travel in Winter, and while we're living in the UK - we're definitely getting our money's worth.

I have owned this jacket for almost two years now, and it has taken the place of about 5 other jackets. It's super comfy and durable. It's been through some torrential downpour and even the snowy conditions in Queenstown last Winter. It's also really practical and compact, which is perfect for traveling. The hood zips away into the collar, which can be handy sometimes, and the jacket has three zip up pockets that are big enough to fit your phone, wallet and passport in. They're also lined with a fuzzy fabric that keeps your hands toasty warm. I haven't found a fault with it yet!
I am normally a S-M in jackets, however I am an XS in this jacket. Kathmandu is a bit generous with their sizing.
Currently priced at $120 AUD.

I bought this jacket for our move to England, so unfortunately I didn't have it in Queenstown, but I have definitely got my moneys worth since moving to England in January as I wear it almost every day! I did a lot of research before buying as I knew what I wanted and I didn't want a jacket with down, so that limited my choices, but I am so happy I found this one.
This jacket isn't completely waterproof, but it can definitely withstand light showers. I have been stuck in heavy downpour with it on as well and it did an okay job for a water resistant jacket. The pockets started to get damp, and after about 30 minutes I could just start to feel the dampness seeping through. It dried fairly quickly after that downpour though so that was good.
For warmth, it is good for around 8 degrees Celsius and higher, anything below and I have to wear another jacket over it.
Its a great fit and really flattering. It also has 3 warm, fuzzy, large sized zip up pockets and so I usually don't take a handbag anywhere as I put my money, cards and phone into my pockets and go!
I am normally a 10 in jackets, however I am an 8 in this jacket and it fits perfectly. It's great because it's small enough to wear another jacket over top of it if you need to, but it's big enough to wear thick layers under it. Currently priced at $199 AUD.
