lisbon and lagos

After the hustle and bustle of Morocco we wanted to slow things down a bit and head to the south of Portugal for a few days. We spent one night in Lisbon and two nights in Lagos. It was the perfect way to break up our travels before heading back to Spain.

accommodation

Lisbon

We actually booked two nights in Lisbon at Chillout Hostel. The first night we were on an overnight bus from Madrid, so we booked this night at the hostel so that we could go straight there in the morning and have a nap. Best idea we’ve ever had. The hostel had a very laid back vibe, the staff were quite happy and friendly. We had breakfast included and the hostel even put on a €1 burger night, which obviously everyone got into. It was a cool way to meet other people staying at the hostel and enjoy a nice, very cheap meal. It was in a decent location, close to the metro and only about a 15-minute walk into the heart of Lisbon.

Overall: 6/10

Lagos

We then stayed two nights at Algarve Surf Hostel in Lagos, which was actually run by Aussies! Very cool hostel. Probably the best we’ve stayed in! The staff were awesome, the pool, games room, common rooms, bedrooms and beds were amazing, and the breakfast.. don’t even get us started on the breakfast – amazing! There was an ALDI supermarket across the road which was very handy as well, as we cooked all of our meals in the hostel kitchen, instead of eating out to save some $$$. On Friday nights they put on a BBQ for everyone for €15 per person - all you can eat and all you can drink. This hostel is mainly accommodation for people on the surf camp that they run, hence the name Surf Hostel, but you can book a bed without the surfing.

Comfort: 7/10

Staff: 8/10

Breakfast: 9/10

Vibe: 8/10

Overall: 8/10

transport

Madrid to Lisbon

To get to Lisbon we took an overnight bus from Madrid with Flixbus. The bus was really nice and really comfortable. We didn’t sleep much as the bus was really full and actually quite humid, but it had wifi, charging ports and a toilet. Overall it was a convenient way to get from A to B and very affordable at the generous price of €22 per person. Also, we took this option for logistical purposes. Planes and trains didn’t really fit into our travel plans on this occasion. But, it was a nice experience regardless.

Lisbon to Lagos

To get from Lisbon to Lagos we booked a bus through Omio for €19 per person. This was the cheapest option for us, but only because we waited until the last minute to book. If you book ahead of time you’ll probably save yourself a few dollars. Again, it was a nice, comfortable bus and we don’t regret booking it. It had nice views and also gave us time to work on our blog!

Lagos to Seville

We also booked this one at the last minute, this time through ALSA. This trip cost us €25 per person. A bit pricier than we would’ve liked, but still it was the cheapest way for us to get from Lagos to Seville.

tours/activities

Lisbon

We didn't have much time in Lisbon, but we feel like we pretty much covered most of it. You can walk around the whole city and see all the sights in a day. The staff at our hostel gave us a map of the city and circled all the best places to go and see. This was super helpful and we recommend always asking staff or locals what to do and see wherever you go! Nothing stood out to us in particular that we would definitely recommend, but we enjoyed walking around the city taking photos.

Lagos

Beach crawl! When you see Lagos on a map this makes a little more sense, so we put one below with all the beaches marked that we visited. We started at Praia de Porto de Mos, made our way along the trail down the coastline until we reached Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse, then continued along the coast towards the center of Lagos. Our favourite beach was Praia do Camilo, so if you don't have time/energy for the beach crawl, then we recommend spending your time here! This beach crawl took us about 5-hours, but we spent a bit of time at each beach taking photos and taking a dip. This was a lovely way to spend the day.

other tips/hints

- Although we didn't do one, we highly recommend a kayaking tour around the caves of Lagos. We saw other people doing it and it looked amazing. A lot of people at our hostel did it and said it was fab.

- There aren't really any surf beaches close by that you can walk to. You have to arrange transport through a tour company or your hostel along with board hire. We wanted to just walk to the beach and hire a board but this wasn't really the case.

- As we recommend with every country that you visit - try to learn a little bit of Portuguese before you go. Just the basics can get you by and the locals appreciate it so much!
